im going to redo my block off plate situation with my insert this summer. So i did what the hearth is meant for and i did some research on what others have posted when they did theirs, and i found some would start their stoves and it would race to high temps like 750 on the stove top pre block off plate and after block off plate installation the stove wouldnt do that and the stove would stay hotter longer.

My question is why would the start up fire not race to high temps once the plate was installed? Wouldnt the plate keep heat closer to the stove making it hotter? My stove just went to 800 from a cold start with kindling and a couple of splits !

A block off plate should not really effect stove temps that much at all. it should just put more of the heat that the stove puts out into the house

Thats what i was thinking would happen but after reading post their stoves operated different. I guess ill see what happens with mine !

The block off plate is to stop heat/air going up the chimney.

I guess back to my original question , why would a stove not race to high temps once a plate was installed?

It should not change that at all if anything it may very slightly increase stove temps
