Is this in your home?

Sorry to see this. It looks like the installer had an "o chit" moment and proceeded with wishful thinking.

Yes, this was after they had to come out and "redo" the whole thing because they had single wall 8 inches from similar wooden beams at my ceiling.

Was the installer the owner of the company?

Ugh.

Yes. The first bad install was one of their "teams" and then the redo was the owner himself "with their best guys". (And you might be asking why did I let them fix it if they did it wrong the first time, but the code enforcer was supposed to cover that.........)

I'm guessing you didn't notice this until after they left?

If so, perhaps your best option could be to start off playing stupid, something along the lines of: "Thanks for coming by and fixing X the other day, that part looks great. I do have a question though, were you in the attic to see the problem in there?"

Nothing more irritating than hiring a "pro" and getting mistakes that are below amateur.

Not a chance, they saw it all. It's been 50 days, had a near chimney fire Tuesday, had certified chimney inspector out today and he found it.

I'm guessing that the forum rules won't allow you to post the company name here but since I'm only about 20 mins. from you I'd sure like to know who to stay away from if I ever need any work done.

Use private messages for that.

Did the inspector give you a written report? If so, I'd take it right down to the shop in person and start questioning what happened since they were given 2 chances to get the job done right, and failed both times.

How did the pipe inspection come out (other than the apparent fubar ceiling penetration)? Was the actual pipe cleared? Did he find any indications of a "real" chimney fire or was is just an over fire situation??

I like the piece of tin screwed to the beam. Effectively reducing clearance to combustible by 2 millimeters. Redonkulous.

This is almost class action worthy (and I am not that type of person.).

He is getting me a report. I have contacted our local news station, they do a "your stories" thing to keep local businesses honest. I actually contacted them after the first bad install, and I think they had a part in getting them to come back out at no cost to us. SO I think they will be interested to know that the 2nd job didn't fix all the problems.

I have contacted the store and the co-owner wife is confident they did it right the 2nd time, LOL

I think that emailing them those two photos would be enough to convince them that the job still hasn't been done correctly.

Be careful or they may come in with a sawzall and cut the 2" clearance out of the wood.

Is the chimney vertical? In my experience, the yahoos will try and bend the chimney over to try and gain every possible bit of clearance.

Best of luck. Hope you all have recovered from the flu too.

pearlgirl, Many of the above respondents do indeed have expert knowledge about the very problem you describe. It might help them provide additional recommendations if you would post a few fotos of your stove, its stovepipe, and how the stovepipe/ceiling support box is located and installed in the ceiling.

All homeowners should have a simple and inexpensive procedure available, forcing those "contractors" who make these kinds of "repairs", to either do it properly and according to existing codes, or be heavily penalized under the law.

You are now forced to go through the headaches and inconvenience of trying to have the job done correctly or receiving a refund from these apparent incompetents.

Good luck, best wishes, and hopefully, a happy holiday season. :)

Things like this are exactly the reason I told my home insurance I was doing the install myself. No guarantee that the "pro" will do it right. When money is involved shortcuts happen frequently. However, my family's life is involved so I took no shortcuts.

How would this help? The photos already provided show that there is an issue.

You contacted the news station before contacting the original contractor?
