I have been burning Uncle Jed's cold remedy, seems to be a good pellet. Are the Doug. Fir pellets worth the additional cost?

Around here, douglas fir pellets are the only thing available, so I haven't burned anything else to compare them to. They heat real well and leave little ash.

They run between $189 and 199/ton.

Jim, what is the price you pay for the uncle Jed's vs. the Douglas firs?

$215 vs306
Less cleaning with DF, that's the difference. Maybe a few more BTU but good pellets in the 8500plus btu range are pretty close on heat.

Around here DF's are $400 a ton and TS hard woods under $200. I can do a lot of cleaning for that difference. Or am willing to. If the DF's were $250 then ya it might be worth while. I keep a couple of bags around of DF, if I get a crappy batch of cheap pellets I'll mix in the DF to fluff them up a bit.

I paid $345 per ton for DF's. I never used them before so I'm taking an enormous and expensive leap of faith based on the positive reviews I've read.

I got to burn Blazers from Oregon when my local HD was scrambling during the pellet shortage. They were very nice, with almost no ash. For $4.18 a bag, what a steal! Blazers are DF. I was just at my HD and told them if I could I'd buy 6 tons right now for next season. Of course they don't know what they'll get.

Right now, HD Augusta has what looks like 40 tons of FSUs and GreenSupremes. Of course temps have finally gotten up to 50, so those pellets might sit for a while. Also, the price went up $10 a ton.

Pete ... Dave can't help it if he doesn't have to pay for shipping across the country. I'd like to get those prices too ... the best I can get is $250/ton Spruce Pointes or Trebios when they are in stock.

You do know it was a joke, right?? ;?
I'm very aware of the shipping issues...

I wish I could read that price list, but the image came across too small. Probably for the best anyway, suspect I would only be disturbed if I read any more about your regional prices compared to what we pay here. From what I understand those Uncle Jeds are the same as La Crete's (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If that's the case, then no, the DFs are not worth $2 more per bag, IMO. Having said that, I am forever interested in trying new pellets so I would probably grab a few bags just to test, and satisfy my curiosity.

Which ones are you burning? I just picked up Packsaddle pellets for $220/ton. They are the best DF pellet I've burned so far.

Clean Burn, which are made in Tacoma WA and Olympics or Cascades which are made by the same company in Shelton WA.

I bought 10 ton of Uncle Jed's this year.

I have tried some of the "Green" Western Elite from ESES. They are a douglas fir pellet. Very nice heat and very little ash. It was hard to tell the difference in heat between the "Green" Western Elite and Uncle Jed's softwood. Not really that much of a difference in ash between the two as well.

For me, the douglas fir are not worth that much of a price difference.

Can't go wrong with the Jeds.(AKA La Crete's)

I have the Uncle Jed's and the LaCrete's both here. They both look the same. Where did you find out that Uncle Jed's are LaCrete's?

You said it all.....

Mostly they will burn clean. In the coldest of winter you could notice a little less fuel usage. That was my experience with them. I mostly ( when I have them on hand) mix them with really ashy pellets and it helps cut some of that ash down. Or to fluff up pellets that don't burn as hot as some. My indication of that is a huge flame for the same heat t he DF will produce with a smaller flame.

Don't overlook hardwood pellets for you Harmon guys out there , some are quite good.

Every stove will benefit from using a pellet that produces less ash… less ash means less maintenance. Would you use a gasoline that chokes your engine with soot and deposits?

Now I've used many tons of the UJ softwood blend and they are an excellent pellet. But the doug firs I have used have been better… hands down. Hotter and cleaner… in all three stoves I've used them in.

This season the UJ's actually left a little clinker material in my St. Croix… the first time I've seen that.

I'll use UJ softwoods next season, too. But with a ton or two of doug firs, too.
