Best Way To Store Wood

Due to being lazy all summer I am now unprepared for the winter. I have 2 cords of dry wood being delivered on Monday. What is the best way for me store it as I use it over the winter. I know a lot of you are going to say maybe the wood is not seasoned. I ordered from the same guy last winter and had no problem. All your suggestions on such short notice are greatly appreciated. DB

I agree with Bret Chase - indoors is ideal for the wood, but sometimes not so ideal for the house because there are probably bugs in the wood. Assuming you can't or don't want to store it indoors, the second best choice would be garage or shed, third would be under a roof like a carport, fourth best would be stacked on a dry surface covered with a rigid material, next I'd stack it and tarp it. Last choice would be in a pile on the ground with lots of the wood in contact with soil, and with a sheet of plastic or tarp hanging over it to trap in lots of ground moisture.

Keep it as dry as possible.

Top cover only. Do not enclosed completely under a tarp. If the wood is already nicely seasoned (doubtful from ANY vendor this time of year, you can leave it all stacked uncovered except for what you may be using over the next few days or so. Any surface moisture will evaporate easily. I like to keep two or three days of wood on our covred front porch.

Don't expect good results..due to being lazy all summer, you said it..I've been heating with wood for a long time, if there is ONE thing I've learned, you get back what you give. If it was easy...well, you know the rest. Keep it as dry as you can..

I would test it, as much as you can to see how dry it is and use it accordingly, while your at it, you might want to buy another 3 years worth of wood so you don't keep doing this year after year.......
