I have been splitting some wood I recently bought. I knew a good amount of the wood was black locust but there was also some red maple, red oak, and a few pieces of black birch.
As I was splitting I noticed there were some differences in what I thought was all black locust. Some of it if very heavy, has rings in the wood and is a deep rich yellow color. The other wood has simliar bark but not quite the same and the grooves aren't as deep. The wood is almost white and not yellow. This white wood splits much easier (less hard and not stringy). I thought it might have come from a different area on the tree or maybe it was just seasoned longer.
Here are a couple pics. Thoughts?
