Thought I'd share this with folks who might have similar issues. So I have an F500 and a clay tile chimney. I've been following the advice of raking to the front on reload. My draft in this season isn't the best. I always find that the splits toward the back really won't get going later in the burn. Temps drop and I have to open the stove and roll them forward. And yes the wood is pretty dry. 1 year old ash mostly. I've been experimenting with raking coals to the very back loading large splits toward glass and smaller all the way back. This has let to burns with better temps and complete burns. Seems like it makes the flames pass thru and by the larger splits on the way up.

If I raked the coals to the front, I would be blocking essential air holes, so , maybe it depends on your particular unit....
If I put a split in the back of the firebox resting on the steel floor and pushed up against the back wall, it will burn very slowly if it ever completely burns. I need to leave an air space under and/or behind the wood to get a complete burn. If I want coals in the morning, then I'll push a split into the back corner.
