We bought a home that has a wood buring stove that vents into a chimney that is in the living room and extends up through the ceiling. We would really prefer a traditional fireplace. Is it possible to lose the stove and convert the chimney into a wood buring or gas buring fireplace? How big a project is this? Rough cost?

Thanks for any feedback.

A few pictures would help. Does the stove vent into a masonry or a manufactured/steel chimney?

gas burning is pretty good possibility no mater what type of chimney is there especially a direct vent fire place ,wood burning not a very good chance but post up those pics and we will know for sure.
