Just bought a house (built in the 1940s) that had electricity installed in the fireplace. There is an log plugged in there now. We wanted to take out the electricity and change it back to wood-burning. Our electrician said this wouldn't be possible.
Is it truly impossible or ALMOST impossible (expensive, elaborate, cumbersome, etc)?

This depends on the rest of the fireplace and chimney system. There could be serious issues that caused it to be decomissioned. Get a certified chimney sweep in to do a full inspection of the entire system to determine feasibility.

Nothing is impossible if you throw enough money and time at it, or at least home renovations wise. Do what @begreen said to do first. Then you'll have a better idea of how much work and how much money it will take.
