Cool summer...

I hope everybody has plenty of dry wood put up! I'm thinking the winter will be a bit cooler than normal too!

I'm anxious to see how the house's behavior has changed since the walls were insulated this summer.

This cool summer has me kind of edgy thinking that it may lead to a repeat of last winter. On the other hand, I took advantage of last week's 70's temps to stage a couple cords of wood on racks.
I'll be installing the new stove and liner soon and after that it won't matter what winter wants to throw at us.
I still won't like it if we get extended sub-zero temps again though.

I've heard this winter in the northeast will be a repeat of last....which means I'm screwed.....way behind on wood, thought I had a handle on it till last winter, and almost all of my scrounges were Oak over the last year. Currently have about 2 cords of Ash split that sat in the round until a few weeks ago, hoping it'll be ready, sitting in the sunniest part of the yard

They said on the news that the midwest will be close to last year as well, which was way cooler then normal with more snow then normal.

That said Last year I had 2 - 12 foot long racks and 1 - 8 foot rack. I ran out of wood in late spring. I added another 12 foot rack so hopefully I will be gtg this year.

Last fall i was eyeballing this big dead tree in my ravine to join my firewood pile this summer. This spring, thankfully, I noticed somebody else had dibs on it.
All good tho, i should be set for this winter wood wise and striving to get my 3rd year ahead.

Its hot out here with temps in the mid 30 c range. We should be having an outdoor burn ban on soon and the forest fires keep growing with all the lightning we've been getting. The forest floor is definitely crunchy! I'm good for next winter but once it cools off and we get some rain I have a few standing dead that I will fall just to round out my supply. We didn't have the brutal winter that the east had but we had the normal long, cold and snowy winter we are used to.

El Nino predictions have been downgraded in spite of an incredible heat blast over the Pacific. It never brought the predicted rains to Calf. Instead we have some unusual conditions to the far north and Calif. with most of the state at the highest drought level. There are some long range predictions for this condition forming in Spring 2015, but that is a long away guess.

We like to leave a couple windows cracked when we sleep at night - the furnace kicked in 4 or 5 days in July. We've been struggling to hit 70 deg daytime temps here, but working with a colleague up from Calif this week and talking about the situation there, and I don't feel so bad (they are getting scorched).

I really hope this winter doesn't whack us like the last one.

Our best local weather guy was asked today if he remembers a cool spell like this in his time in the D.C. area. He said he has lived here for most of his life and didn't remember ever having a July cool spell like this. But he said he also couldn't remember what he had for breakfast either.

Our days have been close to normal in temp but nights have been pretty danged cool. It will be a miracle if it ever stops raining.
First time in my life Ive heard the weather man call for lake effect rains. WTF ?

I'm almost done with the second row on the back deck. It's August 3. Last year I started at the end of September.

My main stacks are ready. And I'm supplementing with splitting the "too bigs" into manageable pieces.

I have also placed around 1/2 a cord by the basement door, which has a 4' overhang. Am adding more as I can.

Great summer to work here. Managed to get a cord of soft maple and one of pine up to get back to The 3 year club. Then got 0.8 cord of clean oak to start year 4.
