Does wood dry when it's freezing outside?

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

I have had wood drop 4% over the course of December, Janurary, and February. I went from 24% to 20%. If I find a few wet logs I'll bring them in and stand them up in front of the stove I can usually dry wood from 29% to 20% after 24hrs. in front of the stove.

you just replied to a 6 year old thread
You sure it's not 6 or 7 months ?

Wood dries in the frozen month(s) of Winter. IN a good windy spot.
Take one or two splits, weigh them, mark the weight and then keep weighing them all Winter. You need a decent scale.
Don't waste your time with a moisture meter, you need too large of a sample size.

It dries in the winter but more slowly, someone had a chart that shows how much wood dries each month and the winter months were less.
