Fireplace insert install - hearth help

Hey all.

I need to extend the current fireplace hearth about 8 inches beyond where it ends. It is approx 1/4in higher than the carpet. I'm not really sure where to even start. Installing the.drolet 1400 and the manual states I need R1 or greater protection.

i'm not much of a "do-it-yourselfer" but what about adding another row or two of tile/brick that is similar to what is there? I assume that the additional space is needed for coverage beyond the insert. is it going to sit out beyond the fireplace?

Rip it up, lay some micore down and a top sheet of durock and slap some new tile down, depending on what is beneath is what makes it tricky, that and fixing the carpet
