That's going to be much better. Yes, birds will make nests under cover. I had to add some aluminum above a chimney I had shortened to below the soffits in my last house. One thing I recently learned about, and wish I had, was a double cleanout. I guess there is a version that has a cleanout hole across from the pipe going inside.

I didn't see one for mine, but they have a clean out tee. I don't know if they are any good.
