Gasket Replacement - Must be clean down to bare metal?

Hello - Sorry to start a new thread about a subject already covered a bunch. But my OCD has kicked in so here I am.

Replacing gaskets on a VC Vigilant, which I did three years ago successfully. I'm in the process of cleaning out the channels w/screwdriver and then wire brush but can't seem to get the door channels down to bare metal. Don't remember if I did last time...is this critical?!

Yes, to bare metal. You don't any chunks of stuff in that channel. Drill with a wire brush work well.

I get most of it out using an angle grinder with cable-twist wire wheel. You still have to clean the corners by hand...
