Goldfinch's in PEI

I am new to feeding birds. I could not do it before because of squirrels and mice ect. I am using some black oil sunflower seeds and they love it.
Such a pretty bird. The males are almost all gold. Very small too. A bluejay is too big for my feeder. The chipmunk and has not been around yet.
Had to take the pictures through a glass screen door and no tripod.

We get a lot of them. Finches, gold, house, and purple are our most common feeder birds. We have flickers raiding our feeders and they are too big, but they go for them anyway. Odd, I thought they were only bug eaters, but apparently they are omnivores.

Most likely they need the fat for reproduction.

We have woodpeckers here(I think that's a "flicker"? . Most are small. They are amazing to watch. They can walk upside down no problem.

Northern flickers are a good sized woodpecker.

Here’s one being held so you can compare them to hand size. They’re much more yellow around here.

Those are big ones, but I have not seen them lately. I think I might have in Ontario. I have seen the bigger for sure.

That's the size of our flickers. They are fairly common here. At times we will see 4-6 in the yard. Beautiful birds.

We have at least one pair of gold finches at our feeder. They stick together a lot. Fun to watch. Got part of a squirrel problem solved, at least the feeder problem. Attached a mfg metal cone around the shepherds hook. Tried a plastic trash barrel cover first. that blew around too much in the wind. As cute as they are the red squirrels are doing some damage. Had to replace the plastic bin with a steel trash can for seed, no more than I should have expected but I found yesterday in the barn one had chewed off the plastic cap on a five gal can of gas leaving bits plastic in the can.

I saw a neat video where a guy attached a slinky to the pole. With the squirrel’s weight, the slinky extends. It retracted back up once the squirrel let go.
