Hey all. I am looking to see if this is a good price for wood. I live in Central CT, 15 mins from Hartford, where 'seasoned' wood prices, in the fall and winter, go for $200.00 minimum to $300.00 a cord. I recently purchased my insert this past November so I really haven't gotten a good idea of how much cord wood goes for out of season (spring and summer). I paid $240 a cord in October and November this past year.

I received a quote for somebody for green rounds. They are suppose to be cut to 18 inch length and no more then a maximum of 18-20 inch diameter to accommodate my splitter. He stated that he will cut to size to make sure I'd be able to split it with my splitter. The quote for green rounds cut to size, not split, is $100 for around a cord.

He gave me another quote for seasoned rounds, same deal with the split length + diameter. The cost of that was $150 a cord.

He also has seasoned, cut, splits going for $200.

All of the wood he deals with is white oak, ash, silver birch -- all hardwoods he stated.

Is this a fair price for the green rounds? How about the seasoned rounds? I am looking to get some in advance to season or even some seasoned rounds to split and stack till fall so I am ready to go. What do you all think?

There is no such thing as seasoned rounds. If you are looking to burn it this year, get the stuff that is split simply from the point of view that it has already started the seasoning process. If for the following year, get the green stuff.

It is fairly well accepted that wood in rounds doesn't really start to season till it is split. Sure - the ends will dry out some but the stuff in the middle won't be much different than if it was left in log length.

$100 for a cord (that's a real cord - 4x4x8 - right?) of rounds seems like a great price to me.

I would get a bunch & get splitting and stacking ASAP - unless I'm missing something?

Going rate for a log length load is $100/cord. I'd say you're getting a great price for rounds already bucked to your desired length for that price. Like previously mentioned, rounds don't really "season", so paying extra for that is a waste of money.

That's log length price here so that would be a good price here. 128 cubic feet.

I'd get the $200 seasoned stuff for this year because in all likelihood it's not ready either.
I'd green logs or rounds for next year.


Why are they in rounds ?
This is a landscaper/arborist that has piles of rounds for firewood and no time to process it ?


 
The one time I bought rounds, they didn't nearly stack up to advertised. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised.
 
They cut by eye too so the round lengths are always off and generally too long. Another irritating thing is they are often cut crooked.

100$ per cord of logs or rounds or anything is the going rate here. Delivered.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone. To clarify I have no ordered from him yet. To my knowledge, this is his job and owns a company which does that. He said he sells the three kinds of wood, seasoned and split for 200$, green rounds for $100, and seasoned rounds for $150.

I asked him multiple times how much it yields and he said a cord or more. Its a dump truck full he said. I know the seasoned rounds aren't completrely seasoned. Also, he stated he will cut it to any length for convienence. I just wanted to see if those are fair prices. Thanks for the help!

Typical response that " its a dump truck full" like all dump trucks are built to specifically carry a cord of firewood.

I know. Deliveries I've had in the past they always say a dump truck full. Sometimes I get on the higher end and get more then a cord, other times not so much. I guess we will see what happens.
 
If I was you I would go with the green rounds for a $100 a cord. Split "seasoned" for $200 is not bad either. The only thing that worries me is seasoned rounds that makes me think how much is a cord in his mind.

Guys like to measure wood by dump truck capacity which never seems to work up the same as full cords.
 
Sadly to say a lot of people do think that wood seasons as soon as it is cut down and they strongly believe it. I have the same argument with my boss who burns wood for few more years than me. Just make sure that cord is a cord not a face cord or any other cords.

Normally - agreed. But in the OP's case he has no split stuff. The stuff that is already split is already starting the drying process. The OP needs every drying week or month he can get.

Not to argue but since the guy seasoned his wood in rounds it might be a better idea to get some compressed wood fuel bricks. Or like other people said get a moisture meter split his split wood and see how truly seasoned it is.

I think that's what I'm going to do and give it a shot. It isn't a face cord a full cord "or more" he stated. I know its not accurately defined until its split and stacked.

This is what I'm thinking. The past two weeks I split about 2 cords of pine, maple, ash, and oak mix. Some of it is dry and ready to go. The maple has been sitting a year in rounds and I read here that it will season in under a year. I am going to go for the 'seasoned rounds' to see what it looks like and see if its worth it. If not, I will go with the green rounds and get ready for next year.

I also have a moisture meter so we will see what the moisture is. I bought some wood bricks in the past. I tried the Eco and Bio, and I don't think I was burning them right because I didn't get that much out of them. How do you put them in your stove? I see we have similar stoves. How do you mix them in or start with them?

I tried different ones and I liked the eco bricks the most. Usually I mix them it 3-5 bricks and cord wood. For extended burn I put bricks on the bottom. If I want hotter quicker fire I put them on top. If you use bricks exclusively you have to use at least 6-8 eco bricks at once. I used to burn 10 at once. As far as bio bricks even more due to their smaller size.

How long does a pallet normally last? It seems like you would burn through (no pun intended) a lot of fuel which could get very costly.
 
Last year I went through one pallet of bricks and maybe a two cords of wood.
