Short and simple.....I was due a log load of 12 face cords of wood. Half Pine and half Mixed Hardwoods...$350 Bucks. An all Hardwood load is $550. I think I just got a better deal.....10 Face cords of Ash, Oak & Cherry in 6 ft log lengths....Cost..$450. Now this load is fresh cut but that's OK...Won't touch it for at least 3 yrs....Thoughts?????

550 x 10/12 = 458. Looks like you got a load of hardwood for hardwood prices. That's fine if its what you wanted. I'd suggest you at least cut it to length to begin the drying process.

The clincher for me was that it will be mostly Oak of all things! Roughly 75% Oak and the rest the Ash & Cherry, If its as good as that I may order another load like it around Labor Day. Brutal Winter for my parts on the way. :)
 
I can buy cut and split for $50-60. Maybe delivered too, but that's usually another ten bucks.

That's why I don't sell firewood. After I move, I may not cut any more either.

Tell your seller it's not legal to sell wood by "face cords" in NY. Akin to selling milk by sq.ft., as face cord is a unit of area, not volume.

Face cord = 4' x 8' x anything they want.
 
Doesn't that come out to $150/cord? I paid about $100/cord for my log length. So, it might not be a great deal, but maybe not a bad deal, depending on your local prices.

I was at a Stewarts (convenience store) yesterday about 30 miles of so from me (Schaghticoke), and there was a sign for cut/split and delivered hard wood for $185 a cord. Tempting. Somehow, though, whenever I bought firewood like that, something always was wrong: wrong length, too big width, not enough, soft wood, etc.
 
I first replied that I would jump on that like a crazy man jumping off a cliff...then I re-read what you said...FACE cords. Like others said, around here, if you watch you can buy "seasoned" cut/split mixed hardwoods for about that same price

We all know that we buy milk by the gallon, but, did you know that the farmer sells the milk to the dairy by the pound? Or hundred pounds to be exact. Like $15 per 100 LBS for example (not sure where current prices are) then adjusted up or down for butterfat content. Milk is about 8.6# per gallon BTW if anybody wants to do the math...

Straight from NYS Dept of Agriculture:
In New York, all firewood sales and advertising must include the three dimensions of the wood, that is length, width, and height, with the wood ranked and well stowed. Face Cords permissible if dimensions are listed.

Yes. Often I can get it cheaper if I were to buy multiples.

I can buy logs for $110/cord or so if I get a 20 cord load, but for another $30-40 I can get a cord bucked and split.

Funny thing is, though, that I sold some last winter ('13-'14) for $100+delivery. Almost every one called me in the fall looking for more, because they actually got what they paid for... an honest quantity that burned like I said it would.

Cut and split wood is going for 4 to 5x that locally.
 
Same here, begreen. $225/cord for split mixed hardwoods, is the price I frequently see listed.

I've seen ads here for as low as 160/ cord for green wood, but I've found that anything under 230ish is too good to be true. Only one seller has legitimately dry wood, and he sells for ~800/ cord.

I finally found someone to deliver log length, have been working on that pile for the past week or so. I should be set for a few years now. :)

$285/cord for fresh split doug fir here. In Seattle $350 for the same and $500 for hardwood from the apple orchards.

haha I believe you're correct... and much less hassle!

Here's his price list... I don't know anyone that buys it, imagine it's just well-off people buying wood for fireplace ambiance rather than heat.

It's crazy around here. Head out into the country a bit and prices are more reasonable, but in the metro Seattle/Tacoma area everyone is out to make a buck.
