hi can you all help us? for us a wood burning fp insert is a BIG investment so we want to make sure we get the right one. because of dealers in our area we are deciding between the jotul 350 and the hampton 1200, they are about the same price. i keep trying to find out what the cubic footage is of the jotul 350 winterport firebox, but no one seems to know! the hamptons is 1.4 cu ft which seems small? i want to know which one has a bigger firebox, and do you think we should maybe spend more and get a bigger unit like the jotul 450 or the hampton 1300??? we want to heat the main floor only which is 1000sqft. and we live on the west coast so it rarely gets below 0. any comments would be appreciated!

What's the size of the firebox opening? That will determine the insert size. I'm also wondering how much heat will head upstairs. The Jotul C450 or Hampton HI300 should do you well. I would opt for the bigger insert.
our opening is big enough for the 450 and 1300, but the installer is recommending the smaller units the 350 or the 1200 as our room is long but narrow and he thinks the heat will be too intense. (?) the firebox on these units looks so small i wonder if we will be able to enjoy a big crackling fire again?
Hello - I'm a new owner of the C350; installed this past July-it sits in a 24x21 room with vaulted ceiling.
Im not trying to heat 24x7,(if this is your goal, I dont recommend this stove due to its size), but when Im home to enjoy a fire, I want to burn wood more efficiently than the fireplace and reap the benefits.
After only a handful of fires, but I'm very please w/ the 350's performance.
Im looking forward to those 1st few cold nights to give it a real test !
Anyway, it's obvioulsy a small stove.
FB is ~ 1.2cu ft, which means more loading w/ smaller splits.
It does throw significant heat after ~1hr of burning. After 3 hrs of burning, I had the room temp up by nearly 10 degrees last weekend.
If selected, I'm sure you will be pleased with its' ability to produce and provide heat, just note you'll be tending it more often than a stove w/ a larger firebox.

does anyone know the cubic footage of the Jotul C450 firebox? Jotul doesnt have it in the specs and no one from Jotul has emailed me back!
thanks for the info seastrike! so do you need your furnace on as well as the 350? when you say it takes 3 hours to get the room warmer by 10 degrees that seems like a long time to me. is that the norm? how do you find the the viewing area of the fire? thank you.

Go with the bigger insert- you can always build a smaller fire inside of it.
We have a decently sized insert, however it is a custom built piece, so I don't know what to compare it to for you. Big enough to build a huge fire for when we need it, but most of the time I just keep it going at a smaller burn rate.

That's without the oil furnace on and the C350 as the only heat source.
For me, the C350 sits in a large 21'x24' room, so it does seem to take ~30 minutes before any significant heat is coming from the stove into the room.
(**Note- Im new at this and no doubt, some of this is due to my lack of experience - for others it may be faster !)
When the pce that keeps logs from rolling out is in place, the viewing area (glass) is essentially 7"x18.5".
I definately agree with others, Get the largest stove you can fit, + the 450 will give you more heat and less tending.
