Holz Hausen multiplies firewood!

So I started my 2nd holz hausen earlier this year around March, but haven't gotten around to finishing it yet. In the center of it I cut a pole out of a maple sapling and pounded it about 18" into the ground which I use as a center-point to keep the stack round. Anyway, I look over at my stacks last night and notice that this pole is leafing out! By the time I use this stack in a couple years it may have added another tiny fraction of a cord haha!

I've seen stumps leaf like this after you cut down a tree, but I never knew that the trunk would try to stay alive like this after it's been cut down.

Thats pretty cool I wonder if it will actually take root enough to grow more then leaves.

Interesting, I've seen Holz Hausen used more often so that's what I called them.

Easier for people to figure out what a 'Hausen' is...like Waffle Haus. Did you put big splits and rounds in your first Holz. like I see in this one? Did you burn any wood from that one yet, and if so, was it pretty dry?

I hope it starts taking root for you... if anything, it would be interesting to see what happens and the course it takes.
If it's starting to leaf, I'd imagine it's getting the nutrients it needs to begin new growth....?

My first one will be used next year, but yes, I used pretty large spits on the outside. I don't think I tossed anything in the center that was larger than 6" though. Most of the wood was already dry though when I built it. And the 2nd one is entirely ash, so I'm sure it'll be fine if I need to get into it next year. The next 2-3 I build will be ash which dries quickly, and past that I'll be 3 or more years out so I'm not really concerned about the wood being too wet when I burn it.

That's a new one.
I have seen some rounds sprouting leaves & even tiny soft branches when left on the ground.
Not anywhere around here, but I have seen fences built in just this way in some tropical countries. Pick the right tree, take cuttings & plant them in a closely spaced row (likely during rainy season) & voila! Living Fence! Wire is optional.

Was gone for the weekend but stepped outside today to see how my new tree is doing...still growing leaves! Part of me want's to leave this stack as-is instead of finishing it to see what happens to this little guy.
