Stopped by a local pellet stove dealer looking for an OAK for my Englander, we get to talking and he says to me that stoves with a horizontal feed are a hazard, if the power goes out the fire can travel back trough the auger into the hopper. Then shows me a new stove he has (don't remember what brand) with a vertical feed.
Now hes got me all worried that it might catch the house on fire if I leave it running unattended. is there anything to this, or is he just trying to scare me into a big purchase.

He also had Barefoot pellets for a decent price, with delivery. Are these any good. He swore these were the best pellets you can burn.

He is full of **** any stove that is not properly maintained can become a fire hazard. Top feeders are more sensitive to burn back than the horizontal feeder systems, in all cases it is improper care of the stove in particular proper regular cleaning of the stove that sets in motion burn back issues (which while they can be messy are usually more smoke than fire).

I'm w/Pook, I thnk the a burn back on the Englander would take an alignment of the planets (along with complete disregard for maintenance and cleaning)

Sounds like a sales pitch to me.
Ripping your stove but then shows you one he sells....hmmmm

i bet i could make the stove he sells burn back into the bin. ANY pellet stove under the right conditions can have a burn back / smoke back. however , all pellet stoves have designed safeties and seals designed to prevent this from happening

Yep! Dish your stove to sell another is an old sales pitch. He's full of baloney! Let me quess, He was trying to sell you a Breckwell?

On the Barefoots, They are a very good brand. Though I woundn't say the best in the world. There are some brands available in the North West that will put most pellets to shame! So he's pulling your string a bit there too! IMO there are a few brands available in the North Eastern states that are very close.

Here are a couple available in the Eastern Part of the US that are as good as or better than the Barefoots (although those are a very good pellet and on my short list).

Okies a Canadian product from British Columbia
Cubex also a Canadian this time from Quebec

I've burned Barefoot and Oakies, I give the nod to the Oakies.

My current short list in no particular order is :

Oakies, Barefoot, Cubex, and Granules LG.

With the exception of Barefoot they are all Canadian products.

I will add a few more brands to SmokeyTheBears list. Hamer Hot Ones-Turmans-Somersets-Dragon Mountains-Spruce Pointes All performed very good for me as well as what Smokey mentioned! There are alot of good brands out there, You just need to locate them. As with any pellet YMMV with results in your stove. Try if you can before you buy any large quantity! :)

I'm with Tink on this one.....a sales pitch.

Find another dealer, IMO.

There is no worse sales tactic than purposely and directly putting down another product.

I love it when dealers hack the competition. They are only hurting themselves. Shows how inexperienced of a sales person you are dealing with. So, let me guess…he let you walk out without selling you the OAK parts, right?
