Anyone have experience with The Catskill? I could only find a couple of postings all seeking info from users. Found one in stock from local dealer for just under $1,000.00. which I thought was a good deal, compared with other compact baked enamel cast iron stoves. I am replacing an old series 8 Jotul in a one thousand square foot vacation home used mainly in the summer. I am not expecting Jotul performance (a new Jotul 3 , enameled is over 2k, and a four week wait), so I am hoping there are folks who can tell me if this thing is a dog. I was also considering a hearthstone Craftsbury, also about 2K, but read some disheartening posts, and by the time I pay for freight and install, this is going to get very expensive for off season fire. I appreciate your experience.

I tried to google it and did find this page, wow I can see what you mean, the prices ARE good, and free shipping to boot. I can see there would be a market for less expensive stoves with this kind of look and it doesn't seem like a niche all that many are getting into. (meaning that the economy line stoves are more of the black box variety for the most part.) You might have to be the guinea pig to let everyone know if these are any good - here is the link I found folks

Per the manual, it looks like these are manufactured by Appalachian Stove Fabricators in Asheville, NC. These are not made in NY. It is possible that these stoves are simply assembled here of imported components.

It looks like the cast iron is made in Hong Kong or China. Here is a shipping information website that shows that cast iron doors were shipped from Hong Kong to Appalachian Stove.

Thanks so much for your imput. I did send the website a couple of questions, including one requesting the location of the manufacturer. The dealer said the stove was made "in upstate NY", but I did not get that impression from reading their site. I will post the response from Hudson River Stove when (if) I receive one. Meantime, I am still hoping to find someone here. What a great site.

What little I know is that a sales company in upper NY State (BAC) is where they are sold out of...but, as mentioned, they are not made there...probably just private labeled here and there.
Jack Cohen from BAC sales has them private labeled and imports them from China. He actually went out there a few times to cut the deal. Having known Jack since he was 15 (back when I was about 15 also) I offered to take a look at them, but I got the same impression as Craig. Kinda crappy quality. I love the boys at BAC Sales, and they would sell me Hudson River at a price where I can compete with the companys trying to put brick and mortar out of business, but I decided not to attach my name to that product.
If I was going to buy an inexpensive stove, I would buy Englander. Made in the USA (mostly) and in my opinion a better quality.

OK, thanks for the updated info. I definitely don't want to get into anything not made in USA, my current POS stove is an old Franklin (made in Taiwan) that came with the house, no need to repeat that mistake again.
BAC may not have a whole lot of stuff for sale.

They seem to be doing ok. I fax a PO, stuff here in two days, fireplace, bbq, vent pipe. They pretty much didnt miss a beat when they had that fire.

Yup. Very funny distributor. Love/Hate relationship. There was a time very long ago when Bob Cohen went far above and beyond to help my father and I out. We've had our back and forths since then, but if Bob or his family ever needed anything from me, I would jump to do it. I'll never forget the Cohens help.
I never received a reply to my querys from the Hudson River Stove Company. Between their lack of response, and the info from you folks, I decided against it. I have actually been tossing around the idea of a gas stove, because it is used off season, is on the second floor, and hell, I'm getting older and thinking I don't want to carry armfuls of wood up a flight of stairs 10 years from now....but I'm sure I won't get the kind of heat I'm looking for from gas. Thanks again.
The house is on Fire Island, a barrier beach island off the southern coast of Long Island, NY. We have bottled propane only, which is twice the cost of mainland gas, so much more costly than wood, yet even wood needs to be shipped over by freight boat so also can be pricy$$. The other reason this is taking awile is having the stove shipped over, and finding contractor able to get there to install new and remove old.
Ahh, my old "hunting grounds" I used to party over there quite often. Lived in East Patchogue, very close to the ferry. What great days those were. Loved the ferry ride, loved FI, which is really its own little world. I'm trying for the life of me to remember the name of the contractor we used to use for FI stove and fireplace jobs. If it pops into my head I'll let you know.
Wow, small world! I ferry out of Bayshore, and yes, it is still a fun party island, yet retains it's small town feel. At this point, I think I will be shipping a stove and chimmny parts by boat, and ask one of the year round local contractors to install. What do you think about the propane stove idea? Any recommendations?
