ID help needed

Part of a scrounge I'm working on. I think it's a Maple, riparian Red or Silver.
 
hard to tell with the age/dirtyness of the round, but i will guess black walnut. post a pic of clean end grain and a shot of a fresh split and you will get much closer gueses.
 
Whack a round open and post a picture of the grain please so we can tell better....
 
I'm saying poplar from the way the bark is stringy and the looks of the outside.

I think it looks like Black Walnut. I do not think it is maple. The bark looks like Black Walnut, and the dark heartwood looks like Black Walnut.
