We recently did a remodel on our kitchen which involved the removal of some hand hewn 4X4's. Decided to cut them down for the wood boiler and saw these designs in some of the cuts. wood.jpg wood2.jpg

Not sure what that is but Maple has some interesting design. That stuff resembles a fossil of some leaves.

Branches, now known as Knots

Looks like a white pine that started out after a fire or a clear cut in an open area. The rings are wide early on but the tree on the left was quite bushy. As it grew the lower branches died off and the the tree heals over the stubs leaving the sap stains.

A modern wood manager might trim off the lower branches to the height of the first saw log and speed up the healing over.

Cut back about 6 in. and see if the design is still showing

Found this a few years ago - old maple, needed firewood more than arts projects. Should have saved it!

My_3_girls that is an awesome slice. I can clearly see a wolf's face with ears down. Would have made a cool end table or patio table.
