Is this worth it?

Hey folks, Someone in my area had some trees taken down in November. He is asking $250 for what is in the pics. Im thinking there is about a cord and a half of good rounds to split there plus all the thinner stuff. I think its worth about $150 considering it still needs splitting and I am picking up. What do you guys think?

Not worth it to me. All the hard work is still left to be done. AND the wood does not appear to be the high quality hard stuff.
I would offer to haul it away. There is little "worth" as it sits IMHO.

Would not pay a dime. If I was feeling pissy I might call and tell him I won't haul it for $250 maybe $300, see how he explains my "misunderstanding".

Around here that stuff shows up all the time for free during the summer. But during the winter, everyone seems to think they'll get paid for letting people clean up their yard. Pass.

Agreed; in my area it would take a while to give that away. Besides, winter's about over and free wood is already popping up more frequently as the tree services get their season started.

It looks like River Birch. It's a hard wood and decent BTUs in the 20 range. Up to you to buck and haul. A lot of effort still left in that pile! I wouldn't pay $1, however, as there's a lot of work still to be done AND you are the one picking up. If you feel like doing the work, I would offer $0 to take it off his hands. I had over a cord of River Birch delivered to me, already split in rounds, and paid $50 in the Fall. It was dumped on my driveway, and I basically gave him gas money.

Agreed on being way overpriced for the amount of work left. I don't mind paying for a scrounge if the price and wood is right but there was a lot of work to do in those pics. I don't think I'd be willing to pay more that $50-$75 depending on wood species. Last fall my neighbor a few houses down rented a lift to drop some red oaks near his garage and power lines. I told him I'd take the wood and he asked what I thought it was worth. He had neatly stacked piles of rounds mostly all cut to 16-18 inch lengths and a big pile of good sized limb wood in 4-6 foot lengths. I payed $75 for that load and it worked out to be 1.5-1.75 once it was split and stacked. People think wood in it's raw form is worth the same price firewood dealers sell it for. The wood is cheap, it's all the labor involved that sets the price. Average stumpage price for firewood (hardwood like oak, maple and ash) is $20-25 dollars/cord.

I have to agree. I might take it for free but certainly would not buy it. You can do much better. Wait a month or two and he'll probably post it for free if anyone wants it.

I agree with the collective. If you really need wood & have trouble getting it anywhere else, you could offer a little something. That'd be worth $150 tops c/s/delivered around here.

hrmm I'd consider offering 50-100 bucks if someone DELIVERED that backyard of wood to my house...but that is about it. Most of it looks like kindling. There is maybe 1/2 cord of good decent sized wood once CSS...the rest is all kindling.

If you are close, and they will give it to you,,and you need it,,,I would get it. Scrounging is scrounging. Call and leave your number with them. They will call later after nobody buys it.

Be patient, deals will pop up, I'd check back with this guy in a few weeks and see if he'll let you have it to get it off his lawn before the grass grows, doubt he'll find a buyer.

This guy's been trying to sell this stuff since fall, maybe he things someone will get desperate and buy it.
