I'm not very old yet, not even half way to the finish line, I can understand where you're coming from! It's a lot of work getting old!
I too am happy to still be here, but I have to admit that life was a bit easier at 65!
I also am happy to be old. I cut or split or haul or stack wood several times each week. I am 83 and all my stuff hurts after I work for a couple of hours. I know it would be easier on my body if I didn't have to mess with wood and the stove but I enjoy the burning and the heat. Every day I try to do something and Mrs Hornet wants me out of the house for a while. I have a big selection of Stihl saws and it's still fun to run them. It's best to keep moving.
Absolutely have to keep moving. I have a bad back but if I'm cutting and splitting wood I feel much better.wiener dog keeps me moving as well.we walk close to 5 miles daily.

Interestingly one of the best interventions for back pain is walking. When you look at the literature it outperforms surgery, injections, PT, meds............. So good job keepin er moving.
Heck, I thought it was just because I was outta shape, but you guys have me thinking I might just be old! 😆
My SIL is getting a new heat pump next year. I'm hoping that it's super-efficient and cheap to run, so she doesn't mind too much when I quit bringing her firewood. 😏

I brought a bunch of wood up to the on-deck circle this afternoon. After I finished up, lo and behold, none of the stuff that usually hurts or aches was acting up. I don't know what to make of this unexpected turn of events.. 😆

My morale wouldn't be very good if I was counting the years up away from retirement, instead of counting down towards.
Better watch out, I had a dirt bike that one day was suddenly running really good. More power than usual, started easy, even sounded great. Connecting rod went out the side of the block the next day.
Well another cutting season soon to start,back is ok not the greatest, going to get my wood cutting permit tomorrow.trying for 5 cords and I'll have enough for 3 years.
Where I live I can get a permit to go up in the Sawtooth Mountains (Idaho). I live in the valley. I have to drive 30 miles up the mountains. The trees have to be dead, away from creeks, and I can't use ropes or equipment. The drive goes like this as I rise in elevation, Rocky Mountain Juniper (great wood but small,15' bush-like, and twisted, so I pass), poplar (big and straight, I pass), a few Ponderosa Pine (none dead or I might get one), Lodgepole Pine (yes, this is the target), Quaking Aspen (no, paper wood), and Sub Alpine Fir (maybe, if easy). No Douglas Fir or Tamarack, unfortunately (I would have to drive 100 miles to the North so too far).
marty319, what kind of wood does your permit allow you to get? More than one species? Does it have to be dead or can you cut live trees? What is your strategy? Is it to cut trees uphill? Maybe land is flat. Can you pull the cut trees with rope or chain? Just curious.

can cut any species except elm but all that is available here is jack pine and poplar,yes we can cut live trees.land is very flat here,i do cut some down and pull out with the truck

I guess i've never seen white poplar, or if i have i thought it was aspen.
I just found out a tree in my yard i thought was cherry is actually "root beer birch" according to my tree guy. Scrape the stem and it sure does smell exactly like root beer.
We made a batch of sassafras tea back in the day. It was tasty.
Root beer birtch is good wood and smells great when you split it (like root beer)! I have about a 1/3 cord I’m going to burn this season, it was a roadside find.

We have a good amount of sassafras here in NJ. Light and easy but burn quality is not so great. Shoulder season wood i guess. If i remember it does dry quickly.
Same. Actually bought a 4 pack of it over this summer. Got reminded I don't really enjoy soda anymore.
