Tonight going down to the high 30s- low 40s! Here in western mass , the rest of the month looks normal with highs in the 60s- 70s but with.cool nights .... sooooo in a couple weeks we will either have a hurricane or heat wave or it will start to get chilly .... I expect to light the summit within the next 3-4 weeks for the official start of my shoulder season!

Got down to 40 here last night. Sunday and Monday night we are supposed to get a frost, so I might have my first burn then.

Since Saturday I've had one fire every day . . . just one though . . . the wife was chilly . . . and since I'm only using my punks, chunks and uglies I don't mind lighting a fire . . . I look at it as a practice session.

We are sitting at 10 degrees celsius again this morning. We have not had frost yet which is rare for this part of the country, especially considering that we are the northern half of a valley.

There is a risk of frost tonight but as I have stated in another post, when there is any amount of sunshine we open the blinds on the south windows and the house heats right up.

We are so looking forward to seeing how late in the fall we can go without the elements on the electric furnace this year.

We know that we will still have a hydro-electric bill that climbs through December through February but it should be significantly less this winter.

If we could put the money together for a fireplace insert and/or a bigger stove in the basement we would be saying goodbye to any added electrical costs.

Right now my biggest challenge is trying to talk my bride into the idea that all of our woodstacks should be moved to right near the house. We don't really need to because we have a tractor and it is only 40 yards from the stacks to the house but I want to make it really simple for the kids to load the woodboxes.

Wet and chilly 50's (feels cooler with the rain) today, 1 load will do just cuz. Really it will be a few more weeks till we really need it. If the sun comes out after I start this fire today the house will get to hot. Weather man says rain all day so I guess that means no sun.

I had my first fire at home earlier this week. But I have had a few at the farm as the trailer cools down quick at nite. But I haven't had a 24hr fire yet at either place. But it sure feels nice to get some work done without sweating my butt off!

This a.m. was 20 degs. warmer than yesterday, and yesterday was 34 when I got up. Wanted to have a fire, but the new stove pipe wasn't done yet, so I put on my robe and stayed warm.
Got the pipe done yesterday afternoon, and now the temps climb. :coolsmirk:
Usually start the burn season the last week of this month. I'm ready for it now, and you watch, I won't need a fire until the middle of October! :lol:

Jeez, I always thought it was colder where I live in Canada than pretty much all of the eastern US. Guess I was wrong, at least for now... Hasn't been close to freezing yet - low 60s in the day and low 40s at night. Will need a fire now and then to warm things up, it was 68 in the house this morning. It does get down to -25C or so in Jan but right now we are sitting pretty...

Yep, clicked the electric heat on this AM to get the temps into the mid to high 60s for the girls when they eat breakfast. Burning wood - not a chance. End of October starts wood burning for me.

Light frost warning tonight for the Adirondacks, looks like that beech and sugar maple will be burning tonight until I get some cherry in this weekend.

Wow you guys start early. We only use the stove part time (so far) and until daytime highs get into the 40s it will blast us out of the house.

Last year with the warm spot we didn't start burning regularly till the last week of November. I doubt we will start before mid-Oct unless it gets cold real fast.

Silly people. The house is still 62 in the AM after an overnight at 42 out. We are NOT burning wood nor oil for 62 deg. That's nutz!

I saw Flint, MI had 38 yesterday morning. It was a tad chilly here but not bad in the house so still not a fire here. However, I did put some wood on the porch and some kindling. We might light a fire to take the dampness out but it is not cold in here. No matter, we are ready.

I have been itching to get a small fire going. I was really tempted tonight, but as I write this I'm sitting with the windows wide open. Only supposed to go down to about 60 degrees tonight. The forecast is calling for warm days in the 70s and coo nights in the upper 40s and 50s. Maybe if its cool the next couple nights I'll burn some of the limbs and such as a practice fire.

supposed to be -2 °C (28 °F ) here tonight with frost. bieng stubborn and not going to burn until near the end of october if temps allow, i hate burning in september. had a very wet summer this year for this area and i think this is going to be a nasty winter so i am sure i will have more than enough opportunity to burn. just not ready to let go of summer/fall yet. -2 °C doesn't seem that cold when it can and does get down to -40 °C or so :ahhh:

this is my first year with a new stove, and the first year i am really using wood as a main heat source, i have about 4 cords of wood thats seasoned and ready, i am not sure how fast i will go through it, so i am planning on not really burning until thanksgiving, my biggest fear is running out of seasoned wood in the dead of winter. most years it doesn't really start getting cold here until december so i figure i'll let my new heat pump carry me through the fall and i will save my wood for the winter.

i often roll out of bed in the morning when it is about -20 °C ( -4 °F) and run out to fire up the truck in my underwear (no nieghbors) then let it warm up while im having a shower and getting ready for work. i really need to install a command start in the truck or hopefully i never get nieghbors
