I'm in the market for a old Jotul 118 and was wondering if you can get a glass front door for it? Can you take the glass door from a newer one and put it on there?
In theory you could machine out some of the original door and install a small piece of glass, but it would get black almost instantly and not really be a view of the fire.
If you really want to look at the first, I'd suggest two possible options....
1. Make up (or have made) a screen which could affix into the door opening for occasional use.
2. Make up (or have made) a "glass screen", which would be a sheet metal frame with a piece of ceramic glass in it - and, again, use it here and there when you wanted the view.
In both cases you should, when viewing with the door open, limit the amt of wood you put in so as not to overfire the stove. That means you are wood-limiting instead of air-limiting the fire.
Obviously this is DIY stuff and is not covered in the manual or under the lab testing, etc.....
