Locust?

I'm working at one of our quarries in Peach Bottom and there's a little clearing going on. Never had locust but judging by pictures I think I have some here? Might get several pickup loads out of this deal

Yes Chumley that looks like Black Locust; kind of surprised to hear that you have never had any before since it is so prevalent around our area but anything is possible, I'm sure there are woods that I don't get that you do!

It's a beautiful day then, fellas! I mostly get my wood from dead and blow downs on my property and adjacent woods, and also from jobsites I work on. I don't have any that I've seen in my woods here, I have seen it within a 10 mile radius from here but just nothing I can get. This stuff has been sitting in a pile from when they cleared before 2-3 years ago, bark is falling off it. Can't wait to add it to the " good stuff stack" for 2018-19. Thanks for the replies guys

I'm in the same boat as you for getting most of my wood. That is a great score nothing better than getting free locust at work. Out my way that is about all I have been getting ahold of. Our right always are filled with them on the edges and when forestry comes in and clears them many home owners just want them cleaned up and removed. Win win for everyone. Enjoy the free score.

I got a small pickup load so far, spilt it Saturday. Waiting for them to get into the next section where there's a bunch, he is going to set it aside for me to pick at each day

Its locust...got me 3 cord of it split and drying...be burning it 17/18...grab all you can! It grows in pockets around here and I grab it every chance I get!

I cut up one that was dead and barkless, split a piece when I got home, 21%. So I threw a piece in the stove, thermostat hit 500*+. Good stuff! I'll save the rest for next or the following year

Not to hijack the thread; but do you guys think this is locust? We have it here in CT, I just don't know how common it is. Apparently it is almost considered an invasive species here, so I imagine there must be a fair amount of it.

Last tree to be taken down, another safe ending to another safe day. After he dropped it, I went over to smell the stump. Love the smell of oak, and they did the same thing since that was the only oak cut the whole time they were there

I'm fortunate, yes. Just the right place at the right time is all. Otherwise it would've gone through the chipper with the rest of it. I'm hoping it will add up to a cord of locust, anything I get will be more than I had before

I can't believe in all your travels you haven't gotten some locust. You'll love it. Treat it like oak. Even with no bark it needs serious seasoning. It will reward you with hot coals. Beware, very lively when you open the stove doors. I give it three years.

Seems there's more across the river in Chester County. I saw some at the farm I used to hunt with some buddies but the owner passed away and I don't hunt there any more. There's a locked gate so getting in is a bit of a hassle, and I have so much ash to deal with right now. I dropped the last 20ish feet today of the one that broke and fell across my driveway 6-8 weeks ago. That tree was prolly more than a cord once I finish splitting it. Need to make room on the pallets for the new stuff.

I'm splitting the locust small and going to find a nice sunny spot in the yard, that Mrs Chumley approves, and stack it there. I only burned 2 rounds of the barkless locust this weekend and only because the MM said 21%, and it's a-hole cold too lol

Now you just have to find a way to be on the clock while getting a few loads. Cleaning your work station maybe?

Yeah but not worth my job. Takes 15 min to cut up a load for my truck. I have a company truck so I'm already lucky enough to haul it in that. A little bit each day, I'm not getting greedy
