Hi all. I'm hoping you can help me ID this. I have a few guesses, but I'm not really sure. My guesses are honey locust (but there aren't any thorns on it)or youngish silver maple. It's a bugger to split. Those marks are from my 8lb fiskars maul. It's a little stringy. The maul doesn't bounce off, but the wood seems to just absorb the force like a very hard sponge. Thanks for any help!

The wood looks exactly like locust. Big locust trees don't have the thorns.
However, the bark doesn't look at all like locust. I yield to the maple vote.

Locust has a green hue to it when green. It then changes when exposed to air to more tan/brown.
