I have performed a few searches of my question but I can't seem to find a direct answer. I have a Franklin Portland stove in my home. It is too inefficient for my needs. I am looking to replace it with a newer stove. Because of my budget I will probably get something from Home Depot like an Englander or Vogelzang. My question is. I have 8" pipe going straight through the ceiling and roof (insulated from ceiling through roof). These stoves have 6" flue. Can I connect the 6" flue to my 8" pipe? If not can I run a 6" pipe through the existing 8" pipe? Thank You

This should be OK in your case. A caveat is this - your existing pipe should be carefully inspected. These chimneys are probably designed for a 30 years life span and if yours was installed along with the stove in the 1970's it may be at the end of life.

The newer chimneys are also tested to a higher temperature standard.

But, in general, hooking up a 6" interior chimney to an 8" straight up interior chimney should work.

I have a 6" stove pipe going into a 9" liner. My liner is 22' and insulated. I don't have any problems with draft or creosote. My situation works--I suspect that yours will too. At least it is worth a try before throwing a bunch of money and effort at it.

Welcome byfert. How tall is the existing 8" pipe? A new stove is going to want a tall enough flue for good draft. Typically this is about 15 ft tall.

You can always try, if it is in good shape. Consider running double wall 6" off the stove to keep the flue gases warmer. Either way, put the adapter at the ceiling.
