I love Jotul, I’ve owned several and will continue to do so. We sell dozens every season. But when a system is introduced that has a combustion box that will need replaced, and a huge cat that’s high end and unique to a particular stove, red flags go off for me.

I don't disagree with you at all. I personally wouldn't buy one or sell them until they are proven. I hope it works out well we will see.
If it costs 3x as much as my cat that’s like 600$. The difference is that this jotul cat may never need to be replaced if the operator is happy with 2019 performance.
Obviously none of us know enough to be really upset about it. Lots of speculation. That’s the fun part.
It could be the reason the US Stove guys are at the bar because they got the Jotul guys to design a nifty add on cat for their stoves.

Like you said, all buyers aren't as knowledgeable as forum nerds, so it may be a long time before we really know what's going on with the new designs, unless we get feedback from some of our pros that see these stoves in person, in the field.

We put a V3 Oslo on burn display this week. It’s a heater! The issue is that it doesn’t have low any longer. With air left on low, it has a beautiful fire with robust secondary combustion, clean glass. All great things. Unless you want a long overnight burn, that ain’t happening! It’s got hot and hotter but no low any more from what I’m seeing. Too bad.. I loved my Oslo’s, this V3 would have been very difficult to use without over heating the room it was in all the time.
Sounds to me like they’ve converted the Oslo into more of a conversation piece than an actual space heater. Clear glass with pretty flames...couple of logs in it during the holidays when guests come over and that’s it.
Ill be hanging on to mine for a while yet. Most likely won’t be purchasing another Oslo if that’s what it’s turned into.
It’s a very capable heater for sure. But most of us that hang around here expect a stove this size to burn low with easy overnight burns. I suppose with a deep ash bed there might be enough coals in the morning to relight, I have my doubts though, unless conditions were perfect.
I have doubts about the durability of that cat. Without a bypass I see potential for pretty quick failure. But hey they give you a 20 yr warranty on it. To bad it is for defects in materials or manufacturing only. I hope it works out.
It burns overnight with no problem. I get up in the morning and throw some kindling on and get it going again. I’ve had it over a week and am really enjoying it so far. We'll see what happens in the long term.
That’s good, it’s nothing like the original Oslo was though. The low end is definitely missing. I don’t want to need kindling in the morning on a stove this size, I’d expect to reload and not scratch around for some coals.
I’m sure! I’m not saying it isn’t a great heater. From the start I've speculated that we would see a lot of stoves having less low end control, this seems right on par.
It’s touted as having a 12 burn time. I think the old version was 8? I get a good relight after 10 hours on coals.
with the operating temp being so high I can’t imagine it holding coals for 12 hours if you’re keeping the ash box empty. If it’s working for someone so far then I guess that’s good.
I also wonder how much that combustor is contributing to the new epa standards. With a stove you can’t turn down, of course you’re going to have lower emissions. It’s burning full tilt.

Like a lot of non cat users? Stuff the air hole with aluminum foil, only reload if it’s almost burned down to nothing, babysit it and turn the air off as soon as possible to avoid an overfire only load large pieces if the stove is hot so it doesn’t overfire etc...Well, I bet some of us nerds could figure out how to deal with that..

Not me brother! I got used to my cat stoves, and now my coal stove, the controllability is unparalleled!

Yep. I don't care how much wood gets burning when I ramp up a load in my cat stove; I just cut the air, close the bypass, and that's that.
Agreed, simpler is always better. Like streaming 93 XRT..just hit the 'play' arrow and let 'er roll.
