I saw two logs sitting in a driveway about 20 houses down. Stopped by and got the okay! I grabbed the big one today. It's definitely soft maple. Is it Red or Silver? I don't see many silvers around here, lots of red.

I definitely was a little overloaded but it was only 1000' away.

I have never had silver, but believe the wood is a lighter color when cut than what you have there.

Looks like red to me. Red typically has the dark heart wood. Silver would be smoother on the split like poplar. In fact the characteristics of silver come close in hardness and heat value of popular.

That's why I'm hoping for red! Its definitely harder than poplar. Most of these are taking several maul swings to get through. A little more difficult than my similar size green ash rounds.

Silver is also nasty. There's all kinds of chaff, bark and crap falling off in your work area.
