more pine logs for the woodshed project!

Did another job last evening after work, (3) 40' pines. Right against a powerline and a garage, had to piece 2 of 'em down, third one we rigged and folded it over whole. I'll pick up the logs this evening, three really nice saw logs for beams and 2x's......more wood for the woodshed project!


Got dark on me during cleanup, so I'll get pics of the logs this evening.....

What are those?? Dumb southern forester here. I forgot all my exotics, ie, everything that don't grow around here!! Throwing a guess if I was forces I'd call them some sort of dir or hemlock?

Clem, they are a type of spruce. Not blue spruce, but some other type (I can tell by the needles and the type of pine cones on them). We've cut quite a bit of spruce this year.....just picked up yet ANOTHER job with (6-12) 50-60 footers for the end of next month!!

Yea forgot about spruce. Another white wood. I knew most of the commercial ones when in school but u never see them here so don't remember them and the ones you see were in an arboretum if we learned it. Too hot for them here really. Where I live were on the edge of white pines ability to survive. They don't really naturally grow here and don't occur naturally. The ones around are planted and usually look sick. SC does have natural white pine but its in the mountains in the point of the top left of the state and along the NC boarder in the Appalachians. But guessing there's not a 60 mile belt of it really along the boarder of the state.

I'll snap a pic of the cones here in a bit and post it later.....I'm sure it's a spruce, but not a blue......can't remember what kind for the life of me.....

Norway Spruce for sure. Easy to identify by the smaller branches that hang from the main limbs and the large 6 inch cones they get. Red Squirrels love them. You will get some good lumber out of those logs.

Yessir, Norway spruce sounds right. I was positive they were a spruce, mainly because of the needles and 'cones....

I went to change mine yesterday I think it was and notices it told me it was too long, and it was longer than what I just entered, so I deleted the revision and it said it was still to long!! So I just quit. The new software obviously shortened them up!

here's a pic of the logs on the trailer, sorry it's dark outside! I left the logs 20' long, I'll cut 'em in half when we mill them. I should have enough logs to make all my posts, most of the 2x10's, and all of the bracing stock. I still need a couple more logs for sheathing and flooring......then, I'll mill it all and let it dry over the winter!!

we should be milling on the first weekend or October, so long as the weather cooperates. I'll make sure to get some pics and maybe a video or two and start a new thread.......

The shed won't be started until April or May of next year, but you know me.......there'll be plenty of pics on that process too!!
