Mounting distance from wall?

I would follow the manufacturers guidline. You can reduce clearances if you go Non Combustable...also " mount a wood boiler " is a little confusing..
 
Don't know about your installation, but any time I've been involved with reducing clearances I have mounted the fireproof metal or cement board on fireproof standoffs so the air can circulate from the floor level, up behind the barrier, then escape into the room at the top.
Even concrete board will transmit heat thru to a stud wall behind it if it is nailed directly on the studs....
