Hi, new guy here. I just moved from Arizona to New Hampshire and, to my dismay, the house we bought only has a propane fireplace. I'd like to install a wood stove in the free-standing garage and ultimately one in the family room. Is there anything that I need to know about laws and home owner's insurance? I've been reading about the distances from walls and insulating materials, etc.

Another question: For the garage I want to get a very inexpensive (or even free) wood stove, what should I be looking for as far as damage? I've been reading about baffles needing replacement, how can I tell? What else would be a deal breaker?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Follow code and the manufacturer's requirements for the in the house stove. Don't take shortcuts. The garage stove may be banned in your jurisdiction. Start by checking that first.

As far as getting a wood stove cheap or free, do some research on what you may want and just stalk FB Market Place and or Craigslist daily. Usually people are asking way to much for sub par stoves, especially this time of year but once in a awhile some one will be looking to just get the stove out of their house and there may be a deal to be had. You gotta act quick though. I got lucky a month ago with a Morso I picked up.

If you are using the garage as a garage (i.e. storing a vehicle and/or gasoline/diesel in there, you almost certainly cannot legally install a wood stove. If instead it's a "shop" then you might have a little more wiggle room but the insurance company will probably still give you a hard time.
