Wow... oak leaves beginning to fall. I have definitely noticed a season shift for about 3 years now, and I have a bad feeling about this year. Good looking wood stacks there, and the carts certainly do come in handy. Ill be moving stacks to the dry shed in another month.

The oak leaf that is falling no doubt is from stress. Seems you folks got a bit more rain than normal and that long hot spell cooked them. They should withstand a year or two of that and still make it through.

Looking good there, lady! Looks like lots of primo wood!
Haven't seen too many oak leaves dropping, but I noticed that all of the black locust in our area the leaves are really turning brown.....
And MAN are the tent caterpillars every hammering the cherry trees.......lots and lots of tents out everywhere.

Maple, cherry, ash, locust and oak mostly. In the back ground of the first pic is one of 2 oaks yet to be tended to in the back yard, hopefully in September. The second one is the same size. Should yield a decent amount of firewood for down the road. This is them before they came down right before Sandy hit.

Oaks are the last to leaf out here, and the first to fall. Willows are the first to leaf out and the last to fall (along with apples). Live oaks in CA are susceptible to oak root fungus if they get any water in summer, so as The Savage says, it could be the heavier rain this summer that is causing the stress and hence the early oak leaf drop.

Here I noticed a few leaves turning here and there on some trees on a hike along the river yesterday, so some of the trees are starting to think about the fall. I am at elevation here though, and we get cool breezes off the Cascade peaks so we get spotty micro climate starts to fall which is pretty normal. I also found a grove of black locust on the hike, and what is obviously the location of the town that used to be out here, some 100 years ago. All that is left of the town is the stand of BL. Obviously one original aging BL tree in the center and a group of surrounding later generation ones. All this in a native stand of bigleaf maples, black cottonwoods, Doug fir and red cedar. I may contact the water district and offer to remove the 'evil invasive BL' stand from the otherwise native tree stand. Should be at least 10 cords in there, and it is only a few miles from my house. They have signs up for using only weed-free hay and non-invasive plants out there, so... they may actually go for it.

My tomatoes are also taking their sweet time to orange up . . . a bit of an odd growing year.
