Does anyone know what the five holes on the fireback of the old vc vigilant are for. I bought an old vigilant recently and the fireback does not have any holes,could this be an earlier design.

Those would be the primary airports. These allow air to enter the secondary combustion chamber in attempt to achieve a cleaner, more efficient, burn. If your new to the stove i'd suggest doing a few searches on here for the vigilant as you'll get some good operating tips(or read through some of the threads i've previously posted just last year).

Also if you dont have a copy of the manual this is good to learn as well;
