I have an Orley manual for U & UC models but what I want to know is what would be a comparable new replacement woodstove. How much to expect to spend?

The Orleys could put out some heat, but with a big appetite for wood. There is no direct equivalent, but the heat output can be matched at a much lower wood consumption with some stoves like the Woodstock Ideal Steel. What matters here is how it would be connected. As a hearth stove, an insert, or freestanding.

Freestanding. Only stove I know of - with my LIMITED experience - w 2 dampers before firebox.

Sam, OK if I move this inquiry to the main forum? That's where the information is on new stoves. I have some thoughts, but want to be sure it's a good fit.

Sure, I’m just a novice trying to figure how to replace this wonderful old Orley w a certified stove that’s as good, or better, than this one we’re in love with since it’s required with home purchase.

Better is a very relative term. What is it you like about your current stove? What areas is it lacking in? What type and size chimney will it be hooked to?

Can you post a picture of the Orley install so that we can see the setup? One thing that would need to change is that any stove is not going to take the long wood that the Orley can. It is essentially a barrel stove with a view window. The other thing is that a modern stove needs dry, fully-seasoned wood to provide good heat.

Here it is & I love everything about it. Fires up w almost NO kindling. Puts out tremendous heat for 1400 sqft house. Almost NO ash. Enuff coals to just add a little wood in AM. What else is there to like?

All of those things are easily accomplished by any medium to large woodstoves on the market.

Oh, it’s 6” chimney.
Is it coming out sideways from the back of the stove? Where does the stovepipe connect to and at what height?

Yes, sideways from back. Connects to chimney just a few inches above exit from stove. I’ve been stunned that it draws so well. Attaching photo again

The thimble height may be the only issue. Most modern stoves are top vent which will probably end up being to high for your thimble. What type of chimney is it?

Hmmm. I don’t know how to answer that. It’s rock all the way up past the 2nd story. Looks just like the rock wall behind it.

Ok so I assume it is a masonry chimney then. You need to find out what size the interior is what condition it is in etc.

It’s good. Just had it cleaned/serviced. No leaks or other issues.
Ok but did they do a full inspection? Did they give you a report of that inspection?

Can you measure your stove from the ground to the top of the flue? Where are you located?? Want to sell? I’m in Tennessee. 931-993-7768 Jim
Here's one in good condition for It's age. A barrel stove with a UL sticker.

That's the big version, 8" flue.
