Poplar, or Poplar

I cut down a couple of trees this afternoon to be used as sleepers and posts, and thought they were the same until they hit the ground.
The leaves are different, but the bark looks similar.
Any guesses....sure things.....?

I agree with nrford. The first is Bigtooth Aspen, as indicated by the large teeth on the edges of the leaves. The second one seems to be Quaking Aspen because although it is clearly an aspen the teeth are so small I can't see them on the screen. They are closely related and I assume the wood is pretty much the same. Around here they sometimes grow together, but Bigtooth is more likely to occur in oak forests while Quaking Aspen is more likely to grow along wood edges, roadsides, etc.

Big-tooth is known as white poplar in some regions.

You can check the stems. Quaking aspen will have a flat stem that will be perpendicular to the leaf surface. Thats why the seem to rotate in a breeze.

It's funny because up here, it seems like everyone just refers to all these variations as Popple.
