Once the fire gets going, and we push back the damper, the fire goes out. It doesn't seem like it's getting enough because we have to open the ash ash pan to let air in. This seems dangerous. It's a Defiant Encore Vermont Castings.

There could be several reasons but the most likely one is wood that is not seasoned properly.

I run a Vermont casting vigilant ,even with seasoned wood if you close the damper to soon your fire might go out.what I normally do is a top down burn ,if I have any reason to think my wood may be a little damp I will let the stove run with the damper open for at least an hour or so .than I will reload let it go for another twenty minutes till my thermometer reads 550- 600 at that point try to close the damper and leave the air inlet door half open ,than you can slowly close off the air door for a longer burn, hope this helps

1 marginal draft
2 not-so seasoned wood
3 catalytic combustor is full of debris and needs cleaning
4 it just needs to run longer before engaging the cat. Every stove/ chimney system is different. Guidelines given in the manual are just that, and you may have to make adjustments accordingly.

These are the reasons for catalytic non-performance 95% of the time, though there are others. Have you been cursed by anyone lately for instance or broken any mirrors?
