Quad vs blaze king

Between toasty and warm
I know there is tons of info about both stoves on this forum already, so I'll be a bit specific in my question and any other info you all want to add is appreciated.

This past summer I viewed a Quadrafire and a Blaze King. I liked them both but I loved the fact that the quad had no cat. I currently have a VC defiant and it has issues even tho I like the stove. I hate hate hate the cat on the VC. So the absence of the cat on the quad is a big plus for me.

I liked the looks of the BK and the reviews all around are excellent. Pricewise, the BK is better than the quad.

My VC has a 6 inch chimney. I'd like to keep the chimney to use with the next stove I buy, does the BK or the Quads use a 6?

What model Quad and BK are you looking at?
 
Also, tell us about the flue system that is currently in place. Describe it from stove to chimney cap including elbows & tees, height of connector and chimney.
 
Erh, um, uh...Here's a pic I took a couple of months ago of the inside of the right heat shield on my 2010 Quad 4300. While the prodigious amount of red RTV somewhat quieted down the rattling from the right heat shield, it is still rattling literally at this very moment. The left heat shield still rattles like a tambourine. Both heat shields are rusted and I'll have to pull them off, sand and repaint when this heating season is over. The blower squeals like a pig stuck in a fence, and no amount of compressed air or WD40 will quiet it down. Tell ya what...my 2010 Quad 4300 with blower cost $2400. For the low, low price of $900.00. it's yours. Deal?

WD40 is not a motor lubricant.
 
And use a couple of balls of aluminum foil (or roxul) strategically placed to stop the rattle.

You had a VC, just about anything is better and don't condemn a whole technology because the manufacturer you chose managed to screw it up. That's like saying that you hate women because one of them was fat. Kinda.

Anyway, don't be afraid of a cat. I have one stove with a cat and one without and they are both great at what they do.

Agreed.

There are other cat stoves out there that are awesome......The cat stove experience can be a great one. What you experienced was not the norm.

And buying a different stove would stop the rattle altogether. After spending $2400.00, it's not reasonable to suggest that I expend time and energy inserting crumpled aluminum foil and/or insulation to stop the stove from rattling. If this were a stove that cost $850.00 I would be more understanding, but at this price point, that's just not acceptable. Further, what's up with the rust on the heat shields? Did quad use melted-down Ford Pintos?

As for the original poster, my suggestion would be to buy a Blaze King.

the blower started squealing after its first heating season, so "eventually" is not consistent with the QA/QC issues on this blower. No explanation has been given regarding rattling and rusting heat shields. as before, if I wanted a project stove I could have bought one for far less. At $2400.00, this thing should be flawless but it is far from it. My dealer is as useless as boobs on a bull and Quad will not rectify the problem. Blaze King seems to build a quality product and stand behind it. The title of this thread is Quad vs. Blaze King, and as the owner of a Quad, I must opine that their product has filled the diaper.

One mans reasonable is another mans breaking point.

Just for fair and balanced reporting - my Quad has been virtually flawless.

This is not a fair comparison. Your "Quadrafire" Isle Royale is actually a Dovre stove as Quad bought out Dovre. As for the original poster, I own a 2010 Quadrafire 4300 Milenium ACC and have been extremely disappointed with it. If you are asking for feedback on a Quad vs a Blaze King, my opinion of Quad stoves is decidedly negative.

I am not aware of any changes made to the design of the IR after the sale, so yes, I believe it is a fair comparison. Not too mention there are many IR owners on this site with newer IR stoves. Some have reported cracked bricks, but that is really the only complaint I have heard for this particular stove.

To the OP - what models for each MFG are you looking at?

Thanks for agreeing with me. Quad didn't change the Dovre Isle Royale design and it's doing fine. Stoves designed by Quad, such as my 4300 ACC, aren't doing fine fine. Does your stove have a blower that squeals like a pig stuck in a fence, and does it have heat shields that rattle and are rusting?
 
My stove has a blower that is OEM from 2002 and works as advertised. My stove is also cast iron. Not much to rattle. Cast iron is for wood stoves. Steel is for snowplows.>>

gosh, wish I had known that. Pacific Energy uses a steel top on their stoves. As does Drolet, Englander, Regency, Osburn, and even Woodstock with their Ideal Steel! Perhaps we should tell prospective buyers to stay away from any stove that is not cast iron because it might squeal, rattle and rust like my Quadrafire. Actually, steel is a fine material for stoves. It's what a manufacturer does with it, and Quad pooped the bed with my stove.

why didn't you file a warranty claim instead of complaining so much? Also wd40 will make blowers quiet down for a little and then make the screaming worse. I do think quads quality has gone down a bit in the last few years but they are still good stoves and they have always honoreD the warranty when ever a customer of ours has had a problem and it was still under warantee.

Perhaps you missed this: "My dealer is as useless as boobs on a bull and Quad will not rectify the problem.". The title of this thread is Quad vs. Blaze King. Chris from Blaze King is on this forum all the time. No one from Quad, or HNI, Aladdin Hearth or whoever the heck they are posts on this forum. If I were in the same purchasing position and was choosing between a Quad 4300 and a Blaze King, it would be Blaze King hands down. As it stands, I'm trying to cut my losses and get into another stove. If the original purchase had been a Blaze King, we would not be having this discussion. To back it up, if you have a 2011 or later Blaze King Princess and want to trade for my 2010 Quad 4300 Step Top (whose nickname is Rattle & Hum), I'll pay shipping both ways for both stoves. Deal?
 
Not disputing your problems with your stove but the forums are not for non-stop venting against a company or a person. You've made your point. Move on.
