How much wood do you burn?

We are slowly getting the addition in place and ought to have the 2nd stove, my Englander 30 installed late August. That stove will carry the brunt of the heating chores this year. The Woodstock Keystone, upstairs on the other end of the house, will burn most everyday too - just not as hard as it did last year.

I probably burned 2-1/2, maybe 3 cords of wood last year - from October to April and that was 24/7 through the Keystone.

So I read a lot of old posts of how many cords folks burn for ONE stove, but what about TWO stoves?

Hey Bill,

Good question! I use a Jotul Oslo as my main stove and a Jotul 602 as my secondary stove. I only use the secondary stove when the temps get into the low 20's and lower. The secondary stove heats the rear of the first floor mainly, approx 350 sq ft., when it gets below about 24 degrees the Oslo struggles to keep this section of the house warm.

I will burn approx. 4- 4.5 cords in the main stove and I use my shoulder season wood(uglies and punks) in the secondary stove. Depending on how cold the winter is depends on how much of my crap wood I will burn in stove #2. Last year I used nearly 1 cord. To be safe, I would say 5.5 cords total to heat approx 2,000 sq ft in an 1886 farmhouse colonial.

Last year I went through close to 3.5 cords heating 2000 sq ft. The basement stove takes most of the load and the other stove only needs to burn during colder weather. I probably would of went through my usual 3 cords but was tempted to play with the new Keystones. Now that I got that out of my system I should be back down to my usual average.

I think your going to find that big Englander will take care of the whole house by itself and the Keystone will be mad at you for neglect.

When I was burning the 30 on the main floor of the two story colonial around the clock and the F3 in the basement office from around 7 in the morning till 9 at night I burned three cord in the 30 and a cord in the F3 each year. The three cord was oak and the basement cord was well dried pine.

I have a Avalon Arbor upstairs and a small stove in the basement. I went through about 6 cords last year but replaced the basement stove with a small Englander 17 and believe I will use less this year. However, remember last year was a longer than normal heating season for me. I did not stop burning until middle to late April.

Knowing about your house, the location of the stove, insulation, etc will help answer this question.

I heat 2000 sq feet from my basement (that's the basement incuded) w/ my 30 in the far northeast corner of Pa on about 4.5 to 5 cord per winter. My attic insulation is good but my wall insulation is poor. I have Anderson windows but they are from the 80's and aren't as good as new.

Two years ago, I had to sometimes push the solo Isle Royale on the coldest days. Now I shift
that extra load to the insert upstairs. I didn't find that I was going through any more wood.
