Real Winter Temps Tonight!

It's in the teens around here tonight. Stove is working. The room I'm sitting in is 75.5 and stove was lit 8 hours ago. It's during this really cold stuff, a little extra volume would be nice. All in all, glad for the cold weather though. That shoulder season was a little obnoxious. Splitting should be easier too since the logs are frozen

Getting to 11 degress tonite. Loaded a rack with oak on the weekend in anticipation of the cold blast. Hope I 75.5. The Hearthstone Morgan will be at full blast later this eve.

I would call that more than a little cold. If it got that cold here consistently, I would have to have gone one model larger.

The weather wizards have changed their minds again. At first they said near 10 tonite.
Then they said 15. Now they're saying 2 degrees. I might just set the P61A
to STOVE TEMP & let er rip all nite. What the heck, I haven't even burned ONE TON
yet. In previous winters, we'd be almost thru the 2nd ton at this juncture...

oh boy! we had -20 this a.m. about 5:00. and like always, i drove about 3/10's of a mile up the hill, lo and behold, -11 on the car thermometer. fun living in a valley. the radio announcer referred to it as "the icebox of the area" when i was growing up.

Previously they said we would be down to 14 tonight. They changed their mind and now they say 18. Told my wife and she said "Oh. OK. Then don't overload the stove and get the house to hot tonight.". Followed by a chuckle.

:lol: Our Englander furnace sits directly below our bedroom. As you can imagine, in addition to the forced air heat that the rest of the house gets, we get quite a bit of radiant heat through the floor as well. On nights like this we have to open a window all the way in the bedroom and keep the door closed because the radiant heat from the floor is enough to make it unbearably hot in there, let alone the warm air circulating through the rest of the house! Right now the firebox has some nice coals going and a fresh load of 2 year seasoned red oak. It doesn't get any better I'm loving this weather and so is the dog-he's never been one for the heat, but he loves playing ball when it's below freezing out. I love it too since the ground is frozen and he doesn't bring half the yard in on his paws when we're done :lol:

Had a guy who lived in Kentucky come work for me in Buffalo. That year we had a cold snap and temps were zero to minus 20 degrees for 2 weeks. I remember him saying he sees no difference between -20 and zero degrees...Once your nose hairs freeze it's cold...I miss that guy.

It's 7 degrees here now. Coldest we've been this year by far. The wind chill isn't helping as it's quite breezy out there too.

12 degrees was the overnight low for our little corner of Northwestern NJ. Went to bed at 10 p.m. with a firebox full of oak and coals and the house at 75. Woke up to feed the baby at 4:00 a.m. to the house at 68! Not so much the fault of my furnace, but rather my drafty house. I reloaded at 4:30 and checked again before leaving at 7:00-I should be good to let the coals burn down all day at least until the sun sets. I wouldn't be surprised if my wife is forced to burn a little oil between then and when I get home tonight. When I finally get around to properly insulating the attic, replacing the back door (crappy old wood door with single pane glass), and doing some airsealing we should fare much better during these kinds of cold snaps. Still, being able to leave my wife, baby, and dog snoozing comfortably in a 75 degree house this morning with the oil furnace lying dormant was a nice feeling

Geez, it only got to 6 degrees. The weather guesser guy predicted 2.
At that temp, 3 or 4 degrees don't mean squat. Anyway, I
DID run the P61A on "Stove Temp" all night at about the "4" position,
(70 degree Room Temp), blower on High & burned 1 bag from 6PM til 5:15AM...
The kitchen was toasty & the rest of the A-Frame was pleasant enough
that the LP insert & Fireplace weren't needed to bump the temp up in
the rooms where they're located. She's back to "Room Temp" for the
day & set at 65. Air is dry, roads are clear & they're sayin 40 here on
Friday. Guess I'll ride the Ultra Classic to work!

Booo...I saw that too-they're calling for 50s here. I was just getting used to this. It will give me an opportunity to clean the chimney though. I've been burning on and off since October, but my wood supply is drier this year than its ever been. I'll be interested to see what the flue looks like.

Totally bizarre, it was up to 54F here this morning. We were 20 degrees warmer than Tallahassee and Orlando, FL 17 degrees warmer than Miami for goodness sake.

Oh well, it's supposed to clear up and cool down a bit by tomorrow. But this warm stuff is confusing the plants. We have a rhododendron that has started blooming.

This has been one bizarre "Winter". BeGreen, sounds like your rhododendron is a bit confused. A few of the plants in my parents back yard had a spell like that. It had been cold for a while, then it warmed back up several times. They did not know what to do. You would think it would hurt them. But it doesn't seem to. I have a sister who lives out there by you, Kirkland/Redmond area. They have a bunch of rhododendrons. Her husband is big into those. A beautiful place you guys live in. I have not been out there in over 15 years I guess. Very nice area though. Enough rain, that was for sure.

Woke up to darn near 30 this morning-it wasn't even a challenge keeping the house warm last night. Tossed in a couple of small oak splits and went upstairs for coffee. Yawn...

It's probably in the high 40's today. It's so warm, a light jacket will have you sweating. Not much of a challenge to be warm on that.
