We moved into a new to us home about a year ago which had an earth stove wood insert inside a heatilator prefab fireplace in the finished basement. We used the insert during the first winter and it worked ok at best, wasn't real effiecent and went through a lot of wood. This install may or may not have been up to code ( I got several different answers from different professionals) so we decided to remove existing fireplace, insert , and chimney pipe. Fortunately there was a bump out in the foundation where the fireplace was which made for a fairly easy alcove setup. After removal of old componets decorative stone was attached to foundation walls and a ceramic tie was installed over concrete floor to create a hearth. A quardrafire 4300 step top stove was installed with black stove pipe to a ceiling support then transitioning to class a pipe through the chase. All that's left is some painting and waiting for cooler temps to try this out!
