I have been doing a lot of research on this. One thin I can't find is if the liner in my flu for the gas will work for a wood insert. Here in AK it's a little late in the year to on the roof.

The answer is NO. Wood inserts require a heavy gauge,
6" (or bigger) Stainless Steel liner.
Most gas inserts use 3" Aluminum Liners.

So more questions, I have not taking the step of pulling it all out. But what are the odds of the damper already being removed for the gas insert? I can remove the gas line outside and cap it off about 6 feet away so I am not to worried about that.
