A condominium neighborhood by me recently had several trees dropped and bucked. They have been sitting there so I helped removed 2 truck loads. Neighbors were friendly and waved as I loaded. I think I have black locust, ash, and black cherry? Not familiar with black cherry. Headed back tomorrow...

I think you are correct. the Black Locust is the stuff that is not very round in cross section. The Ash has the whitest wood, and the cherry has the orangish wood. All are very good firewood. Nice score!

By the way, this type of post usually goes in the Wood Shed forum.

Nice score bmore, on my phone but think you are 3 for 3. I don't cut a lot of ash but the BL and BC definitely look legit.

This is the only pic I have of my BL but you can see a couple with the bark. Put a piece under black light and see if it flouresces. That will be definitive.

I scooped the easy pickings. A lot of black locust and cherry left. The locust is tricky to get to. Hope it sits a few days until the ground freezes. Then I can get on it.
Recently split and stacked some other locust. Hope it's ready for next season. Can't wait to see why everyone is so stoked on it.

I think you got all 3. I've become a big fan black cherry recently. I split some quite a bit in May, and in 6 months it was down to around 14%. Burns at about 20M BTU. Not the longest burn, but catches fast.

Agreed on the BC, I've been going through a lot the last few days. Beats being cold, and mixing in some ash and hickory. Nice score Bmore

Nice score. I agree with the majority you nailed all 3. That Black Locust is starting to rot a bit. Once it gets to that stage you should really keep it off the ground - it seems to excel the process, turning it into complete mush.

Black locust is rotting? I thought black locust last for a long time, thats why they make fence post and poles for barns out of it.

There is a split on the lower right front and another on the third row about half way up the stack that the bark says black locust for sure. The rest looks like black locust without bark, very common for b.l. to loose its bark. You may have noticed a thin, stringy membrane between the bark, or where it used to be, and the wood.

Are you referring to the OP pic or mine? I know mine is BL that has been on the ground for 26 years now! Was only split last year, and absolutely no rot. I think it's ready to burn
