Now I see why everyone said it's a shoulder season wood. Burns a lot quicker than any hardwood I used last year and it perfect for the temps we're seeing right now. I am very gladly saving the good stuff until later!

I am burning Red Maple, Aspen, Elm, and some pine. The oak is being saved for winter.

Got a pretty full load of Red Maple in now, a few splits in back and some chunks in front. I wanted to see how long a full load of that stuff would last.

Good to see it is working out well for you fireview2788. I am going through some Boxelder (soft maple species) now. Will be switching to White Ash and White Pine mixture when I run out of it. Happy burning.

We have 4 pieces of lumber cut-offs in the stove now. Might throw a couple splits in before going to bed but won't unless it cools off in here. Last night it was too warm so just let the fire go out. Not bad at all in here this morning but lit a fire anyway as wife wanted to do laundry.

Burned some silver maple over the weekend with temps in the mid to upper 40's. It did a fine job.
Burning white ash now.

I have ash as my shoulder season wood as my walnut still bubbles out the end I wonder if I cut it so small it just soakes up air moisture????????? I have about a cord of silver maple i get to try out next year.

I've been running mostly Silver Maple ,with a bit of Cherry and Aspen mixed in . This A.M. I through in some 3Y.O. Oak ,just to see how it would be . Burned well , I even got to close a few windows after an hour . Don't think it,or the Black Birch is needed just yet !

I just got a load of Silver Maple about a month ago and I'm burning it now and to keep the fire going hot enough I'll throw in a piece of Ash. What I like about the Silver is what most of you are saying, the good wood is being saved for when it's really cold out and you want the fire to go through the night. Besides, if I were burning the good stuff now all the windows would be open we'd probably have to walk around naked. HUM Naw, never mind, I'd lose the neighbors.

Silver maple is an excellent firewood. seasons pretty fast. Its a good shoulder wood to. I like to leave half my splits kinda big 6-8 inch diameter for overnight burns with Oak and BL.

soft maple and small red oak splits in now. First "big fire" of the year. Had left heat off all day, out runnin'.Came back, went from 64 to 74 in a few hours.

Fired the stove the first time this season today. Decided 40 degrees with 30-40 mph winds were enough to fire it up. Been burning a mix of silver maple with BL,walnut, and sugar maple chunks/uglies. Silver maple takes off quick and easy and the denser chunks hold coals for a long time for reloads. Silver maple is not one of my favorite woods but it burns so in the stove it goes. Just cut up about 4 cords of it in the last week so I will be burning allot of it the next couple years. To add insult to injury, I have to take down two large cottonwood trees in my yard next year so I will end up having about 6 cords of silver maple and 6 cords of cottonwood on hand.

Good stuff.So far am burning a little Norway,Silver Maple & small Mulberry,2-3 days weekly when its under 50 degrees.Warmer this week past few days,no fire since Friday.Have about 3/4 p/u load left.After that's gone will have Walnut tops/branches & milling scrap.Saving the Red/White Oak,Hickory & larger Mulberry for the coldest days/nights once they get here.

I cut about a cord of silver every year for the shoulder season and also for the neighbors who knock on the door who want bonfire wood. It seasons about as fast as it burns.

When splitting silver maple don't be afraid to leave some large. They will make good overnighters if you can limit the surface area that the air can get to. They will disappear by morning.

This year we have Hemlock and White Pine for the shoulder season, perfect for this weather.

I'm burning some silver maple and boxelder right now...oak, walnut, ash and honey locust awaits December - March.

I don't have room for shoulder season wood. I just make small fires with the good stuff.

I have not done any silvers for about 2-3 years. I just turn the damper down and use thje good stuff stright through.

I have to pay for the good stuff......the Maple and Pine is on the property, and although not entirely free (mortgage, taxes), it's pretty darn close.
For now at least, I'll save the good stuff. First couple years, I didn't, and could have had more oak in the stacks if I had.
