Anyone thought to ski boots [aggressively studded like logging boots] to protect a weak ankle?

or is this just dumb?

Ski boots provide so little movement or feeling I'd think it'd end up being more dangerous, as you're more likely to trip on something.

I totally destroyed my ankle a few years ago, and for the next 2 years after they took the screws out I just wore one of those lace-up braces and took it easy.

If you're set on strong boots, I'd try motocross boots before ski boots. I can wear my Gaerne hinged boots all day comfortably.

MOTOCROSS boots - that is a Great Idea - Thank-YOU

I had looked at the lace up brace and couldn't decide if it would be up to the task

I don't know the circumstances of your ankle/s, but the lace up brace did fine for me. I had ripped the tendons loose from both my fibula and tibia, and broke the fibula. So I had a plate screwed to the fibula holding it back in place, and a long screw between the 2 bones at the ankle to hold them together while the tendons re-attached. Then they took out the main screw after 3 months. It took over a year for me to get back all of my strength and balance (and even 7 years later I can still feel it after working it hard), but later that summer I was able to wade fish, which is probably the hardest thing. You can't see where you are stepping, and are constantly stepping on softball sized slick rocks or flat rocks that may tip or move under you. Just the brace (and plenty of ibuprofen) got me through fine.

If you go with the motocross boots, you really get what you pay for. I've got friends who insist of Thor or Fox or similar lower priced boots, and they seem to only last a season or 2 for trail riding. Alpinestars, Gaerne, and Sidi are all top of the line and made to last, but you'll get some sticker shock! Hinged ones will make walking easier, although eventually most of them break-in somewhat anyway.

Some tips: an "ATV" tread will be more similar to a work boot, while most "motocross" treads are almost slick on the bottom. And if you go this route, try on a pair locally. Sizing is typically european and a little off, and a lot of the brands are made for narrow feet as well. Once you find a pair you like, you can normally save big money buying online.

FYI, Gaerne sells a boot called the "Balance Oiled boot" which looks very similar to a work boot.

You can try trekking boots too. Similar to ski boots, but a little more flexibility for hiking and the like.

Do you want something just for everyday use? Or something to use for working out, exercising, cutting wood, etc? I think a lace up ankle brace would provide good support. My daughter uses a brace called "Active Ankle" for sports. Most of the other volleyball players use it also. Get it on Amazon for $30-35.

Daily - I drive a desk - its weekends now that I need to ensure I don't twist it - I have 4 acres of 70 foot pine [ sad / unfortunate blown down ] to clear - and I am sure to get "busy" and not watch my step. Thank-you all for the ideas.

This thread helped me out too, I'll have to look into the Active Ankle brace 1RADGUY. My fiance and I play racquetball every Thursday, and I'm typically limping by the time I get home afterwards. I stopped using my lace up brace just because it took so long to put on and took a lot of tweaking and re-tightening during play to keep it working. That active brace looks a LOT easier to use, and will probably protect better.

The gaerne balance are observed trials boots. Trials boots have good protection but good hinging at the ankle. Much more flex than MX boots. and also more $$ than mx boots. Volume I guess. good for walking.

try ryan young products rypusa I think

Or just good ankle supported work boots.

Daughter swears by it. Had twisted her ankle several times during track (hurdles). So we got the Active Ankle for volleyball on the advice of friends. Although rigid, it allows her complete flexion of ankle but won't allow her ankle to roll. Probably half of all girls I see play volleyball wear this brace. I have never seen a girl twist or roll her ankle yet. Well worth the money. I would assume it would work great for racquetball as well. Good luck!

Get a pair of high lacing boots. Like 13" to 16" high.

There is the T1 and T2 version
What do you use?

I was doubting that would be enough to prevent further drama - thinking I need something with a more positive hinge / brace
but I never thought about this before - so I am a big dumb newbee :)

Doesn't the ibuprofen interfere with your drinking?

Ibuprofen doesn't, but once I mixed bourbon and Percocet when I was bedridden after surgery. Never again! I watched Schindler's List and bawled like a baby for like an hour after the movie was over!

I'm a skier and I race dirt bikes. The moto boots are much better for walking but it is still a heel toe walk. Both are hard to push your foot into. The tight spot around your ankle is almost too small to slide your foot past so if your ankle was damaged, putting these boots on and taking them off would be painful.
