I split some 3-5" rounds (~20" long) off some branches and it takes some accuracy to hit square in the middle using the x27. How good is your finesse game?

not a problem w/ an 8lb maul.
even if it'll fit in the stove unsplit, I prefer to split'em.

I always split anything over about 4". If I'm low on stuff to split, or just feeling really ambitious, I'll split the 3" ones too. If there's a curve at all, I like to keep it pointing towards me. If I miss or it deflects off (exceedingly rare :P), I'll usually just toss it in the "split" pile instead of trying again.

i don't like putting round pieces in the stove, they can roll toward the glass.

My hydraulic splitter hits dead center every time.:p
you put a 3" round in the splitter? you can probably hand split 5 rounds while waiting for the blade to move back and forth on 1.

With a 10 second full cycle time (and normally not using full cycles) I don't think that is the case.;)

And no, I normally don't split 3" rounds. I was being a smarty pants.

gotcha. so you can adjust the distance from the round on a splitter? I didn't know that.

I'm a dead aim with my hydraulic. I split almost everything I can. If it's not round it can't roll out of the stove.==c

I only crack 4" pieces so it dries faster .
