Got a nice load of free rounds of white and red oak, hickory and black birch. Split it over the weekend. We put that little 5 ton electric splitter to work. Definitely better than hand splitting.

This wood was real wet. I'm letting it dry in the pile a couple more day before I stack it. It's in the windiest spot for now. Had a few rounds that smelled like an Italian Deli when we split them. Was red oak, I believe, but it had a cheesy odor that was not unpleasant in the least.
Get it stacked off the ground in a single row

Bogydave. I am doing single rows in the places that get the most wind/breezes during the year. The oak will be dried at least two years, and three if I have enough other wood not to use it sooner. I put the wood up on raised racks for a while. You can see one in the back of the pile. Then I use pressure treated landscape lumber to set them up on. They are only off the ground a few inches at that point and I intend to season the splits fully there.
I am trying to figure out a way to make a woodshed that either won't "P" off the neighbors, and won't need me to get a building permit. I might be stuck with having the stacks run along the property lines, though.
