Stihl 066 without a chain brake

What is this saw worth? It cranks up and runs QUITE WELL, and has been well cared for.

The guy wants $400 firm for just the powerhead, wondering if that is a good deal. He let me cut with it today (he runs a 36" bar on it) and it was a monster.

I would probably get a shorter bar, as it felt very nose heavy.

Thoughts?

How old is it? Is it a pre-chainbrake model or did he take the chain brake off?

Also, there is literally no point in running a sub-36" bar on a 066. Even if you put a short enough bar that it doesn't feel "nose heavy" it's not like you'll be doing a lot of limbing with it.

I have no idea.........

Thought about running the serial number by the dealer and seeing if they could help me on an age.

I would run a 25" stihl bar, don't need anything bigger.

Post a pic. The pre-chain brake Stihls are unmistakable.

I assume you mean the really odd looking Stihl's that have the gas cap pointing upward..........this is the flat top.

I did purchase the saw, here is a pic.



I think this is a chain brake model and the chain brake was removed. It cranks just like my 5 year old MS290, idles smooth as butter, and cuts like an absolute BEAST. I bucked a 17" diameter oak with it, and was AMAZED.

It's definitely a little bit of an overkill for 25" bar. My 660 pulls the 36" real nice like. I will admit it is nose heavy, but once you're throwing chips it'll feed itself.

My local dealer had 25" or 36"........I rarely come across anything bigger than 20". The biggest I have cut in the last 5 years was 24". The biggest I have ever even had a shot at was 29". I would rather have a shorter bar with more control and balance. If I got big log trucks delivered, and only used it for bucking big wood, I would probably have gotten the bigger bar. For me, I will use it for all around cutting, so I am happy with that length bar.

Having cut without the chain brake on it, I am gonna leave it that way for a while. I will probably get around to putting one on it this summer......

For that application, I can see the merit of the shorter bar. My 660 is used for felling/bucking big wood only. I have my 034 with a 20" bar for the general work. We have alot of farmers in the area tearing out small thickets of woods. I am getting access to alot of BIG trees lately.

Right now the plan is full comp 25" bar.

If I ever get into anything big enough to warrant a bigger bar, I will go full skip with 36" bar. I will have to get more than one tree 30+inches to bother though......

I've got 2 12' oak logs at my place right now that I can't get through in one pass with the 36" bar With all the wood that Dad and I have access to, we though it would be a good time get a new saw. He burns a quadrafire insert, that thing will put out some heat!!

Wow.....now that kinda stuff will stretch the saws legs.
